AN ARTIST HOUSEHOLD I live and work together with my family in the “Kunsthaus am Necker” in lower Toggenburg in Switzerland. My husband Franz Widmer is a sculptor and art-creator. Though we are very much an artist "couple" we each go our own way in finding artistic expression. Under the name “WIDMER & WIDMER”. We have had a number of exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad. Typically these exhibitions feature Franz's sculptures and my paintings. PAINTING IS MY NATURE The basis of my creative artistic work is my relationship to color and my strong enthusiasm for everything to do with color. This relationship results in an individual manner with vital and dynamic pictures of high color expression. With gold and silver accents I let my paintings glow and bring them a singular manner of illumination.
Painting is existential for me. With painting I feel closer to the sense of my destiny. When I reach a phase of “creative flowing” I let this energy run freely with joy and pleasure into the paintings. The afternoon is my time of most intensive work when bright daylight overflows into my atelier. I listen to music which tends to support and enhance my endeavors. The themes for which I engage myself are many-sided and I let myself be open and apprehensive to my environment. I motivate and inspire myself with both usual and “homely” topics, but also with exotic motives. People, animals and plants are elements in my optimistic picture-world. Paintings typical of my style are very picturesque in spite of the expressive and unusual coloring.
I like to use sculptures in my painting, which I paint over with oil-colors together with modeling of the same. To some extent I use sand, textiles and precious stones or other natural materials which I blend into the painting. All together this creates an interesting and combinative texture in concrete and abstract painting. THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE EXOTIC INTO EVERYDAY LIFE It would be contrary to my inquisitiveness and playful nature for experimentation were I to concentrate on one theme alone or stick to one avenue of expression. These tendencies result in singular paintings or groups of paintings or even a series of paintings with diverse contents and themes. I define this perpetual painting and life process as “the transformation of the exotic into everyday life”. The exotic means to me something bizarre, something unusual, something with great intensity – it can be a fleeing moment or something which reoccurs, but I know that it wants to tell me something from which I may learn and which I must paint. This feeling of the exotic can ignite in the middle of my everyday life or sometimes it can occur in an intensive way on journeys, because foreign motives can strongly influence my artistic perception, which then logically finds expression in the subsequent paintings. Working on my canvas I submit to these impulses and allow the vital spark into the heart of the painting. Exotic or even ecstatic conditions which are the potential for the highest emotional perception surround us daily – we have only to be receptive to them. These exotic conditions are a symbol for the valuable energy which is always present in life, but which is not so often sensed and expressed. PROJECT “SYMBOLMANAGEMENT”
As an artist couple we have undertaken the project SYMBOLMANAGEMENT as a method of exploration and visualisation of the constructive values of our modern life. SYMBOLMANAGEMENT translates this understanding in genuine three-dimensionality and apprehensible symbols. ____________________ Adresse: Doris Widmer Kunsthaus am Necker Unterdorf CH-9125 Brunnadern Tel. 0041 71 347 23 71 Kontakt / e-mail: art@doriswidmer.ch
